ABSTRACT:This study investigated the degradation of anthracene using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in liquid media it is cultured. Fungal inocula were grown in growth medium for 24 hours. Varying concentrations of Anthracene (2.0 ppm, 1.75 ppm, 1.25 ppm) were introduced to S. cerevisiae. The samples were subjected to UltraViolet-Visual Spectrophotometer for five times in two hours interval for the determination of its growth and rate of degration. Inoculation of fungal culture into anthracene contaminated growth media resulted in the degradation of anthracene among various concentrations: 2.0 ppm, 1.75 ppm, 1.5ppm, 1.25 ppm, 2 ppm was degraded 36.18%, 1.75ppm-35.82%, 1.50ppm-34.43% and 1.25ppm-25.16% degraded. Moreover, the growth of S. cerevisiae treated with anthracene (1.25 pp,) showed a close range of growth rates when compared with the control while growth rates in culture media, 1.75 ppm and 1.50 ppm were affected by the presence of antracene as indicated by the decrease in fungal growth. Least growth response was exhibited in 2 ppm.
