ABSTRACT: This study investigated the sorption rate of chromium using the alga Oscillatoria willei. The effects of chromium on the growth rate and morphology of the test organism were also studied. The test organism was exposed to five concentrations of chromium ( 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 6 ppm, 8 ppm, 10 ppm) for twenty-four hours. Within these twenty-four hours, samples were taken for every three hours and were taken to the DLSU Instrumentation Room to read the amount of chromium absorbed. The data were statistically analyzed to determine if there was a significant difference in the sorption rate in the varying concentration of chromium. Statistical results hqad shown that there was a significant difference in the sorption rate. In the case of the growth rate, samples of the test organism were counted using haemocytometer. Samples were taken everyday for three consecutive days for cell density computatiohn. Data gathered from the cell density were statistically analyzed and showed that there was no significant difference in the growth rate in the varying concentration of chromium. Morphological changes showed that cells in the control, 2 ppm and 4 ppm of chromium were normal in terms of shape and color (cell shape are broad with a green color). However, in 6 ppm of chromium, the green color of the test organism slightly turned to a lighter green and in the 8 and 10 ppm, changed in color was the same with 6 ppm but with breakage of the filaments.
