Thesis (Undergraduate) Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2017.;BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CHEMISTRY.;ABSTRACT: This study aimed to prepare a modified starch-based wood adhesive from extracted cowpea starch. Extracted starch from cowpeas yielded 35-40%. The FT-IR spectra of the starch adhesive showed three important peaks confirming that the starch-based wood adhesive was successfully prepared. The peak at 1713.22cm showed that the starch was successfully oxidized transforming the hydroxyl groups into carboxyl groups. The coupling agent was also bonded to the starch leaving a peak at 853.05cm. The monomer unit of the butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate can also be seen in the IR spectra at 1263.21cm. The SEM photograph of the gelatinized starch was compared to that of the starch adhesive. The gelatinized starch showed a smooth SEM photograph while the starch showed a rougher and more compact photograph. Shear adhesive strength of the adhesives were determined. Results show that the starch adhesive with 9% vinyltriethoxysilance (VTS) achieved the best shear strength compared to others. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post - hoc analysis, it was found out that the commercial adhesive was significantly different compared to the prepared starch adhesives. Therefore, the commercial adhesive Wood Glue was more durable than the prepared starch-based wood adhesives.
