ABSTRACT Philippines is a country with a diverse ecosystem that offers a wide range of plants that are utilized in the form of extracts to aid patients experiencing a variety of health conditions, yet the efficacy of such extracts is understudied and not confirmed. Basella alba is one of the prevalent plants in the country and was utilized as a methanolic extract to observe its effects on cyclophosphamide treated male ICR mice. The ICR mice were initially treated with cyclophosphamide to simulate cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to obtain further observations on the effects of the extract on the body weight and hematological parameters. Varying dosages of the B. alba methanolic leaf extract were administered orally for 14 days with the liquid dose dependent on the weight of the mice, while the methanolic leaf extract of Carica papaya being utilized as a positive control due to it being proven as an effective weight moderating and hematologic augmentative substance. On the 12th day and 15th day, the final weight and complete blood counts of ICR mice were gathered, respectively. In conclusion, the hemoglobin and red blood cell count of the ICR mice reveals that macrocytic hyperchromic anemia induced by the cyclophosphamide is not treated by the extract. Likewise, the B. alba does not significantly affect the white blood cell differential count. Although, an increase in monocyte signifies ongoing blood disorder. Therefore, it was found that B. alba methanolic leaf extracts is not effective in regulating the hematological parameters of cyclophosphamide treated ICR mice.
