ABSTRACT: Amidst the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) locally and worldwide, researchers dig land and dive waters to seek novel and effective antimicrobial sources. Albeit underexplored, marine microorganisms including those from marine sediments are considered novel antimicrobial sources posing great potential. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial properties and the secondary metabolites observed in marine sediment-derived Cytobacillus kochii and Micrococcus luteus against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Identification of samples was primarily done through morphological analysis and molecular identification. Thin layer chromatography was performed for the determination of the classes of secondary metabolites in the bacterial samples, detecting coumarins in M. luteus, flavonoids in C. kochii, and terpenoids in both species. Disk diffusion assay was utilized to determine the antibacterial inhibitory potential of the bacterial samples. As several zones of inhibition are observed, the results of the antimicrobial susceptibility test were statistically significant (α = 0.05). This study serves as a stepping stone in understanding the complexity of marine sediment-derived microorganisms and their potential. Keywords: secondary metabolites, bioactive compounds, Cytobacillus kochii, Micrococcus luteus
