ABSTRACT The research analyzed the production process of the three Best Picture awardees in the Cinemalaya 2008, 2009, and 2010 film festival based on the different management components, specifically the 5 M's: manpower, material, method, money and marketing. It was conducted because the researchers believed that the study would be highly beneficial not only to the filmmakers themselves but to the independent film industry, film majors, and aspiring filmmakers as well. The research presented details on the process comprised during the pre-production, production, and post-production stage. It also discussed the problems the filmmakers encountered and the given solutions to that. The study only focused on the three films: Jay, Last Supper No.3 and Donor, which were awarded Best Picture in the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively. The researchers trust that the targeted audience will affirm the hypothesis that independent films can also be of quality and can be as competitive as mainstream movies. For this study, a non-probability sampling procedure, specifically, the Purposive Sampling technique was used since the respondents chosen would only be those who are knowledgeable regarding the involved field. Thus, the research confined the respondents to individuals who have been part of the production during the making of the films. For instance, the researchers conducted an interview with the directors, assistant directors, and line producer of the mentioned films. Likewise, it does not include the researchers to be immersed in the production of the films for it will only be based in the in-depth interview the study will conduct. The paper also discussed the function of the 5M's in Management of each sub-parameter of the three production stages which consisted of the different manpower involved, the different materials and methods used, the allocation of money or budget accompanied by the process determined in the marketing stage of each film production. The descriptive method of research is deemed most appropriate for this study. Moreover, the approach in the data gathering of this study is qualitative in which the researchers made use of a self-made interview guide. Through an in-depth interview with the Cinemalaya filmmakers or producers all of the required information would be determined. It is indeed that the production processes do exist in producing an independent film and the 5 M's of Management such as the manpower, money, materials, methods, and its marketing aspect play an important role in creating a quality independent film. The analysis of this case study would not only serve as a manual for the different stages and elements of filmmaking, but this can also be a tool for knowledge regarding the importance of the elements of each production process as well as how different management proponents work to aid in creating quality independent films.
