ABSTRACT: The descrimination of the Cr (III) uptake by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 2115 was analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of Cr (III) concentration on sorption, growth and morphology of the yeast cell were studied in details.b The strain was purchased from UP-NSRI in Diliman, Quezon City. The growth rate and sorption rate were determined by UV-VIS Spectrophotometer and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer respectively. The morphology of the yeast S. cerevisiae was scanned and photographed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The data were statistically analyzed using the Analysis of Variance, Tukey and Dunnett t-tests. The experiment revealed that as the Cr (III) concentration increased, the cells tend to grow in size and the charges to be slightly round. Moreover, it has been observed that the growth rate decreased with the increase in Cr (III) concentration. The results from the sorption and growth rates obtained exhibit the potential of S. cerevisiae to uptake Cr (III) in the liquid environment.
