ABSTRACT: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: This study aimed to provide a compilation of materials for speech contests in the Division of City Schools, Manila based on the assessment of the factors affecting the English teachers in their functions as trainors. Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the English teacher-trainors in oral exposition in the City Schools of Manila? 1.1 What specific qualifications, training, and background do these teachers possess? 2. What are the problems encountered by the English teacher-trainors with respect to their functions as trainors? 3. What materials may be proposed for speech contests in declamation, oration, and choral interpretation in the City Schools of Manila? PROCEDURE: The descriptive method was used in this study. a survey was conducted to assess the status, qualifications, training and background of the teacher-trainors as well as their perceptions of the problems confronting them in their functions as trainors. Likewise, recommendations and suggestions were also sought from these trainors and their preferences of the materials they are going to use in their functions. The result of the survey served as the basis in the compilation of materials for speech contests in declamation, oration, and choral presentation in the City Schools of Manila. The participants in this study consisted of two representative trainors from fifty elementary schools, representing the primary and intermediate levels. A total of 100 participants actually participated in the survey composed of 50 trainors from the primary level and 50 from the intermediate level. TREATMENT OF DATA: The determination of the status, background and training of the trainors as well as their perceptions on the problems confronting them were tallied, and the frequencies thus obtained were computer in percentage and interpreted accordingly. Separate findings for each category of trainors were also tallied then consolidated as a group to show the individual class data as well as the group data. FINDINGS: The demographic profile of the trainors show that all are degree holders with majority having masteral units leading to a masteral degree, possessing trainings and background, recognition/ awards in their assigned tasks as trainors and between 34-45 years old with 10 years experience as trainors. The number one problem as perceived by the trainors is the non-availability of materials for speech contests and that all these trainors signified their preferences for compilation of systematized materials to be used in the literary exposition which are value-oriented and written by famous authors. CONCLUSIONS: The provision of compiled materials for speech contests will definitely have a favorable impact on the widespread utilization, training and development of knowledge and skills in the literary program of the Division of City Schools, Manila. Eventually, the impasses between the recognized benefits supposed to be derived from literary expositions and communicative arts on one hands and the desired response that is expected in the field of actual implementation may yet be narrowed if not bridged altogether with the provisions of reservoir of materials that the teacher-trainors recognized as a problem. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Integration of value-oriented materials in the lessons for reading and language by the English teachers. 2. Intensification of a wider base of participation and involvement of teachers in literary expositions through regular programs in school levels. 3. Provisions of more reading materials in literature and literary exposition in the library for the teachers' and pupils' utilization. 4. Recognition, awards, incentives, scholarship grants should be maintained and improved in favor of teacher-trainors in their participation, service and achievement toward the development of literature in the school. 5. Instituting bank of literary materials by way of collection, creation, adaptation of relevant materials for literary expositions in addition to the existing compilation of materials for the subject.
