INTRODUCTION. In the past decade, there has been a great change in nursing. The expanding concept of Health and Illness which includes the expansion of the national health services particularly the increase in hospital beds, health centers, out patient facilities and mobile health team requires a corresponding increase in the range of activities of the nurse which is a concern of all schools of nursing or colleges of nursing. The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, College of Nursing, is coping with the new trends in nursing. The nurse has to participate in the prevention and control of diseases, treatment and care for the sick, rehabilitation of the invalid and the infirm, as well as in the control of epidemic outbreaks. Each of these duties requires specific knowledge and skills. The public expects much from the nurse regarding adequacy and safety of nursing care. Furthermore, the advances on our medical science and technology change the role of the nurse as a member of a group, responsible for providing and giving care. The nurse, by virtue of her academic preparation in a learning institution and her work experiences, is vested with unique knowledge and skills which enable her to perform a significant part in the care of an individual or a family. As the one who observes the patent twenty four hours a day and who gives direct and indirect patient care, the patient expects the nurse to make decisions and to make judgments on situations the come with her daily work. Whatever she does affects the recovery of the patient, and the patient's attitude towards his recovery and to himself as a person. Because of this, the nurse's work performance is a special concern of all the hospitals, much more of the schools of colleges of nursing.
