ABSTRACT: The study was conducted to evaluate the Cultural Knowledge of Filipino Nurses to Work Abroad: A Basis for Developing Guidelines on Nur, time and sing Practice in U.S.A. The aim of the study is to assess the profile of the respondents who want to go to the United States and sources of information. Also, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the level of awareness of cultural knowledge of the respondents based on Giger and Davidhizar's five phenomena of culture namely: communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control. Moreover, the study aimed to know the significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and the level of awareness on cultural knowledge in terms of the said five phenomena of culture. Based on the findings of the study what guidelines can be developed to promote their Nursing Practice in U.S.A. The respondents of the study were registered nurses who were currently working in Tondo Medical Center and Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center and are planning to work abroad. Thirty (30) registered nurses become the respondents of the study, eighteen coming from Tondo Medical Center and the remaining twelve from Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center. The descriptive-correlational method of research was adopted and the questionnaire was formulated by the researchers and validated by two Social Science and one English professor. Moreover, percentage, weighted mean and Pearson R. Correlation Coefficient were the statistical treatment used in the study. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that the nurse respondents have a high level of awareness towards the five phenomena of culture according to Giger and Davidhizar's Transcultural Assessment Model namely: communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control. Moreover, it was inferred that there was no significant relationship between the profile of nurse respondents namely, age, highest educational attainment and of information and their level of awareness in terms of five phenomena of culture according to Giger and Davidhizar's Transcultural Assessment Model namely: communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control. Although the results of the study revealed that the nurse respondents have a high level of awareness towards the five phenomena culture, a guideline for the nursing practice in the United States of America was developed for the purpose of producing culturally-competent nurses capable of providing individualized and quality nursing care to an American patient. It comprised the five phenomena of culture according to Giger, and Davidhizar's Transcultural Assessment Model namely: communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control. The following conclusions formulated were the following: First, most of the nurse respondents were 20-25 years old, BSN holders and obtained information about the American culture by means of magazine, books, printed materials and television. Second, the respondents have a high level of awareness on the five phenomena of culture according to Giger , spaceand Davidhizar namely: communication, space, social organization, time, environmental control. Lastly, there was no significant relationship between the profile of the respondents namely: age, highest educational attainment and sources of information on the American culture and their level of awareness on cultural orientation on Giger and Davidhizar's phenomena of culture, namely: communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control. The following recommendations were made: For the Filipino nurses who plan to work abroad, they must have significant level of awareness on the American culture specifically communication, space, social organization, time and environmental control to prepare themselves transculturally as health care professionals. Thus, their cultural competence should be promoted for them to be able to render effective delivery of care that is highly individualized to the culturally unique clients/patients that they will be handling. They should always aim to promote the excellence of the nursing profession and practice whenever they may be in the world. For the nursing students, they should be already molded as competent nurses that will make them globally competitive nurses catering to clients or patients of diverse cultures. They should be aware of the information about the culture of the United States which can help their preparation in case they prefer to work abroad. For the Nursing Educators/School Administrators, they should acknowledge the importance of Transcultural Nursing to the nursing curriculum. As educators, they should aid their students with sufficient knowledge regarding other cultures so as to present to them proper ways of relating culturally unique individuals. They should be significant resources of information regarding the differing cultures in the world. They should facilitate enhancement of the over-all skills of the future nurses, giving emphasis on cultural competent skills of their students. For Future Researchers, they may include other phenomena of culture to be studied upon other than what the researchers have already included here in this study. They should always aim to promote the excellence of the nursing practice.
