ABSTRACT: The phenomenological method was used to describe the lived experiences of Filipino male post-amputee patients with phantom limb sensation and pain. The aim of the study was to unravel these experiences to better understand patients patterns of behavior and interactions. Thus, enabling nurses to improve pain relief practices that help enhance patient recovery. The purposive sample consisted of nine Filipino male patients, aged 18-50 years old who had lower extremity amputation of the Philippine Orthopedic Center and at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center. The participants were approached within three weeks to two months after amputation. They were informed of the study and discussed with to sign the consent form. A tape recorder was used for the initial interview. The patients were coded with numbers on the tape and the same referred to them upon transcription. The open-ended, unstructured interviews were conducted facilitated by guide questions geared towards the description of the phenomena. These lasted for twenty minutes to one hour per patient. They were given opportunity to review an interview summary for clarification. Data was analyzed according to the method used by Colaizzi (1978). The organized Clusters of themes were given formulated meanings, and discussed with literature reviews. The conclusions derived were that Filipino male post-amputee patients responded differently to phantom limb sensation and pain. Thus, multiple realities existed. The cognitive theme that emerged was Realization. These were described by Incongruence, Impression, Recollection and Explication. The effective theme was Adjustments. The theme clusters derived were Grief, Shame, Sentiments, Limitations, Acceptance and Changes. The behavioural theme was Coping with both Constructive and Defensive Coping behaviors. Constructive Coping was through Verbalizations, Self Help Interventions, Diversional activities, Tolerance, Humor, Faith and Social Support. Defensive Coping was through Social Isolation, Withdrawal and Avoidance. Thorough assessment of patients with phantom pains was recommended for nurses to provide holistic patient care. The meaning-centered approach in evaluating the symptoms of the phenomenon was also advocated. The use of a nursing care model was designed as a response to the needs of Filipino post amputee patients experiencing phantom limb sensation and pain. The vision proposal of two programs was suggested for the benefit of the Filipino amputee population.
