ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to know the socio-cultural adaptation, perceived Finnish language proficiency and coping strategies of married Filipino migrants in Finland. It also aimed to understand the relationship between the said variables and the demographic profile of the respondents. Fifty (50) married Filipino migrants participated in this study. They were given 4 questionnaires namely, Socio-Cultural Adaptation Scale, Brief COPE Inventory, Perceived Finnish Language Proficiency questionnaire and a profile sheet where the respondents were asked to state their educational attainment, length of residence in Finland, residence status and occupation. The data gathered were interpreted and correlated to know if significant relationship exists between socio-cultural adaptation, perceived Finnish language proficiency and coping strategies; Significant differences between the respondents' demographic profile and their socio-cultural adaptation, perceived Finnish language proficiency and coping strategies were also analyzed. To test the null hypothesis, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationships of the variables and ANOVA and cross tabulation were used to uncover if significant differences exist. The findings of this study were: (1) majority if the respondents have college degrees, continuous residence A status, have no jobs and have been living in Finland from 5 years and below; (2) the average mean score of respondents' socio-cultural adaptation was 2.08 which correspond to slight difficulty. The perceived Finnish language proficiency of the respondents was found to be functional with an average mean score of 2.96. Moreover, the most prominent coping strategy of the respondents was Active Coping and the least utilized coping strategy was Substance abuse; (3) there is no significant difference between the demographic profile of the respondents and their socio-cultural adaptation and only the respondents' length of residence in Finland was found to have significant difference with their perceived Finnish language proficiency; (4) high level of socio-cultural adaptation was found to be related to the use if coping strategies self distraction, active coping and self blame. Also, perceived Finnish language proficiency and the coping strategy humor was also found to have a significant relationship; (5) there was no significant relationship between socio-cultural adaptation and perceived Finnish language proficiency. Based on the above findings, the following conclusions and implications were derived: (1) married Filipino migrants in Finland have high educational attainment but majority have no jobs; (2) socio-cultural adaptation was found to be high and the respondents perceived Finnish language proficiency was reported to be functional; (3) the demographic variables measured in this study do not affect the respondents' socio-cultural adaptation. Only the respondents' length of residence in Finland was found to have an impact on their perceived Finnish language proficiency; (4) socio-cultural adaptation and perceived Finnish language proficiency have no significant relationship, thus, both variables were independent of each other. This can also mean that they were also affected by other variables not being measured in this study; (5) coping strategies were only significant to some specific areas and variables. Thus, there was very little evidence gathered in this study that demographic variables, socio-cultural adaptation and perceived Finnish language proficiency have a certain relationship with coping strategies. Based on the findings and conclusions therefore, it is recommended that: (1) awareness programs or activities that will allow married Filipino migrants to realize the differences between Finland and Philippines, thus, minimizing the impact of difficulties of living in Finland. (2) programs and activities designed to help the married Filipino migrants find jobs and integrate in Finland should be held, particularly in the area of improving their Finnish language skills; (3) Government (Finnish and Philippine) and non-government organizations should promote awareness on how the education acquired from the Philippines compare to Finnish education so the married Filipino migrants and the Filipino migrants in general will understand and learn what steps should be taken for their degree to be recognized; lastly (4) further studies and researches with a bigger sample, that will identify more factors and variables, and that will facilitate the integration of Filipinos in Finland, are also recommended.
