ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine / evaluate the communication needs of selected Metro Manila industrial firms and the level of proficiency on the communication skills of TUP graduates as perceived by their industrial supervisors with respect to basic knowledge, written, oral and graphic communication. Thirty-nine (39) industrial supervisors were chosen as purposive samples for this study for they are in direct work contact with TUP graduates from 1990-1997. These supervisors belong to the manufacturing, telecommunications, government institutions, design, service, banking, marketing, semi-conductor and construction firms. A researcher made questionnaire was used as its instrument for a descriptive-correlational study aimed at determining the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. Frequency counts, percentages, weighted mean and Pearson r were utilized for the analysis of data. Based on the TUP graduates profile, the study revealed that majority are employed in manufacturing firms, with permanent items and graduates of batch 1991. Area heads and engineers were the positions assumed by most of the graduates and have been with their respective firms for three years. The study further revealed that the communication needs of selected industrial firms in Metro Manila based on the items on basic knowledge, written, oral and graphic communication as perceived by the industrial supervisors to be Important to Very Important. As regards the level of proficiency in the communication skills of the graduates based on similar items, the findings showed that they have responded All Right to the communication needs of the industry. However, majority of the items presented except for graphic communication revealed Neglible to Low relationship. This is an indication that the proficiency level of graduates on basic knowledge, oral and written communication requires further enhancement to be able to effectively respond to the communication needs of the industry. The study partially confirms the hypothesis that no significant relationship exists between the communication needs of selected industrial firms in Metro Manila and the levels of proficiency on the communication skills of TUP graduates.
