Determination of mass transfer coefficients and diffusion coefficients of haloperidol and diphenhydramine HCL through conductance method at infinite water dilution - Undergraduate Thesis: (Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering) - Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2024

ABSTRACT: The rising presence of haloperidol and diphenhydramine HCI in wastewater poses environmental threat, and mass transport parameters are currently scarce for minimization of pharmaceutical concentrations. Diffusion coefficients of haloperidol and diphenhydramine HCI were determined through conductance method at infinite dilution using representative ions [HAL*], respectively. Molar conductivity data were calculated through various equations for electrolytes, including the higher order Fuoss-Hsia-Fernandez-Prini equation, at serial dilution concentrations of 15.625 to 250 ppm and temperatures of 303.15 to 343.15 K. Resulting limiting molar conductivities were paired with the Nernst-Haskell and Nernst-Eistein equation in determination of mass diffusivities. Findings show that infinite dilution and self-diffusion coefficients of [DPH*] = 7.449 x 10-9 m2/s, [HAL*] = 6.266 x 10-9 m2/s, and [CI] = 3.137 x 10-9 m2/s. Mass transfer coefficients were also estimated at varying agitation setups (RPMO, RPMI, RPM2), with pharmaceutical samples being collected over time. Reported highest experimental mass-transfer coefficients were 7.622 x 10-6 m/s for haloperidol and 3.2624 x 10-6 m/s for diphenhydramine HCI, both at RPM2. Results presented offer values in better understanding of fate and transport of these antipsychotic pharmaceuticals dissipating in aquatic systems.
