Abstract:
As seen by the growing number of coffee shops in the country today, particularly the newly developing small coffee shops in Manila, the coffee industry in the Philippines has started to grow quickly. Coffee shops have affected the growing number of coffee drinkers who have started to focus on both the quality of the coffee they consume and the level of service the employees can provide. The purpose of this study is to determine the core competencies of the selected small-scaled coffee shops in Manila what problems these employees might encounter in developing their core competencies and what could be the possible intervention to help those competencies to be developed that can significantly affect the operations of the business. This study uses qualitative and quantitative approaches, using a multi-technique sampling design which is Random and Purposive. The researchers provided a survey to gather the demographic profile of employees, a Likert scale for their core competencies, and an open-ended question discussing the problems encountered and recommendations for their improvement. The result of this study indicates that small-scaled coffee shops' core competencies are t par with the competencies of people with training and certification from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in Barista NC II.
