Abstract: This study investigates the effects of pedestrian-only streets on the tourist experience along General Luna Street in Intramuros, Manila focusing on accessibility, convenience, and safety. Using the Sustainable Tourism Development Theory as the guiding framework, the research examines how pedestrianization fosters a sustainable and inclusive urban environment for tourists and locals. A quantitative research design was employed, with data gathered through surveys distributed to tourists in the area.
The economic analysis highlights increased foot traffic and revenue for local businesses, demonstrating the street's role in stimulating the local economy. This study emphasizes the importance of pedestrian-friendly initiatives in creating a more vibrant and sustainable tourism environment. Recommendations include infrastructure enhancements, such as shaded walkways and improved signage, to further elevate the area's appeal as a cultural heritage destination. These insights aim to support urban planners and policymakers in implementing sustainable tourism strategies that benefit visitors and local communities alike.
This research underscores the vital role of pedestrian-friendly streets in promoting sustainable tourism and revitalizing urban heritage sites. The recommendations put forth include further infrastructure improvements, such as the addition of shaded walkways, dedicated cycling lanes, and enhanced signage to optimize the area for both tourists and local communities.
