Comparative Effects of the Four Leading Brands of Local Cigarettes on the Hemoglobin Concentration and Histopathology of Mice. 6 6 - - - - - - - - . - . - 0 . - . - 0 .

ABSTRACT : The hemoglobin (HGb) concentrations of mice passively exposed to four different brands of local cigarettes labeled A,B,C and D were compared. Further, the extent of hispathological changes on thier lungs, heart, liver and kidney were also examined. After one week post-exposure, alower Hgb concentration was observed in mice exposed to all the four brands of cigarettes as compared to the control (CTRL) mice (28.5g/dL). Mice exposed to brand A gave the lowest Hgb concetration (19.0g/dL0, which implies that among the four cigarette brandss, brand A had the greatest potential to induce anemia. In contrast, Brand C had the Hgb concentration closest to the CTRL, which was 25g/dL. of the different tissues examined, the lungs had the most pronounced changes showing edema, interstitial pneumonitis, congestion, necrosis, hemorrahages. This was followed by the heart tissues , liver and kidneys, however showed minimal histopathological changes relative to the lungs and heart. In terms of the extent of damage made on the tissues, Brand A had the mildest effect while Brand D had the most adverse effect on the vital organs of mice. The findings of this study underscore the role of secondhandsmoke on the development of anemia as well as histopathological damages among exposed individuals.
