ABSTRACT: The paper studies the apparent rivalry between Rizal and Bonifacio as national Hero. Jose Rizal was the acknowledged national hero until the 1950's. By the 1960's and 70's radical nationalism placed Bonifacio as contrary symbol. The critique of Rizal's position, and the circumstances that led to Bonifacio's ascendancy are explained.
