A training of health volunteers from Barangay 656, Intramuros, Manila and creation og an organization of these volunteers was conducted by Group 6 Medical Clerks Class of 1994 of the PamantasanngLungsodngMaynila on June 28 to July 12, 1993 at the Maestranza Chapel, Intramuros, Manila. The specific objectives of the program are (1) to recruit residents of the barangay to become health volunteers, (2) to organize and form a set of officers among the health volunteers, and (3) to give lectures, conduct seminars and workshops on various health-related topics and community organization. Fourteen (14) residents were initially enlisted and satisfied the criteria on subject selection such as residency in the concerned barangay, ability to read and write simple sentences, of good moral character, endorsement by a barangay official and willingness and dedication to work without any form of compensation. But at the end of the training, only eleven (11) were able to finish the program and received certificates of participation. The training program consists of 3 phases: (1) lecture discussion, (2) group dynamics and (3) practicum. The trainees also had an educational trip to various health institutions such as OspitalngMaynila Medical Center, Rosario Reyes Health Center and Cabildo Health Center. The trainees were given a 41-item Pre-test before the start of the lecture series. Three persons (27.27%) obtained a grade of at least 75% (31 raw score out of 41 items) which is the passing grade while 8 persons (72.73%) had a grade below 75%. At the end of the training, they were given a 41-item Post-test. Eleven (100%) obtained a score of 31 points or better and had an equivalent grade of 75% or better. Certificates of participation were given to trainees who had at most 1 absence from the 7-day session and with at least 75% grade in the Post-test. Elections to four key positions (President, Secretary, Treasurer and PRO) was conducted by secret balloting, followed by induction of new members and officers of the Samahanngmga Health Volunteers ng Barangay 656. Continued surveillance of the organization's activities and functions is being done by the proponents of this paper who are the advisers of the health volunteers organization. |
