ABSTRACT: This research determined the effect of capital structure of life insurance entities on their financial performance as basis for making financing decision, The entities employed in this study were based on the list of Insurance Commission, It aims to examine the correlation of capital structure on the financial performance of the entities and its dependency on capital structure. Capital structure is an important component of a business as it determines if the entity relies heavily on debt or equity in financing. The capital structure pertains to the combination of debt and equity employed for funding an entity's assets and activities. A firm's capital structure includes equity (retained earnings, common, and preferred equity) and debt (short-term and long-term). Life insurance entities are notoriously capital intensive which makes it interesting to know how they finance their services, and how they make profit. Correlational study was used as a research design on determining the effect of capital structure on financial performance. Debt ratio and equity ratio were the measures used to know the capital structure, while return on assets, return on equity, and net profit margin were used in measuring financial performance. The Pearson's Ranking Correlation Coefficient was employed to analyze the correlation of the metrics of both capital structure and financial performance, while Kendall's Tau Beta was used to determine the dependency of the measures of financial performance on the metrics of capital structure. This study used strategic sampling in choosing the entities to be employed. The study revealed that the capital structure of selected life insurance entities has no effect on their financial performance. Most of the measures of capital structure had no correlation with the indicators of financial performance. Also, most of the financial performance metrics shows no dependency on the capital structure metrics. The study also found that the entities rely more on debt as their source of capital in financing their assets, operations, and/or expansion.
