Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to compare the Academic Performance of working and non working students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in relation to their stress level and study habits. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in tems of the following? a. Age b. Gender; c. College; d. Year Leve? 2. What is the profile of the working and non-working students in terms of the results of the a. Measures of Stress; b. Study Habits? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the level of stress and study habits of the a. Working Students; b. Non-working students? 4. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance and each of the following a. Level of Stress b. Study Habits? 5. Is there a significant difference between the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students the semester before they started working and during the term that they are working? 6. Is there a significant difference between the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students during their employment and the present General Weighted Average (GWA) non working students? To answer the questions raised, the following hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance: 1. There is no significant relationship between the level of stress and study habits test of the working students. 2. There is no significant relationship between the level of stress and study habits test of the non woking students. 3. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance and level of stress of the working students. 4. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance and level of stress of the non working students. 5. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance and study habits test of the working students. 6. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance and study habits test of the non working students 7. There is no significant difference between the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the non working students the semester before they started working and during the term that they are working. 8. There is no significant difference between the current General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working and non-working students. The respondents of this study were students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila excluding the freshmen students during the school year 2008-2009. There were 40 non working students and 40 working students coming from different colleges. The level of stress was measured through the Measures of Stress adapted from Cherewatenko (2005), a 50 item test, validated by the researchers' adviser, some professors of Psychology and the Chairman of the Psychology Department of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. The study habits of the respondents was also considered and is measured through the (FSSHA) Filipino Survey on Study Habits and Attitude adapted from Brown and Holtzman (1967), a 40 item test, which was also validated by the researchers adviser, some professors of Psychology and the Chairman of the Psychology Department of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. In order to measure the respondents academic performance the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students before they started working and during that they are working and the current General Weighted Average (GWA) of the non-working students was also considered. The frequency count and percentage of the demographic profile were computed to give a general description of the students. The researchers used the mean of the results in the Measures of Stress and (FSSHA) Filipino Survey on Study Habits and Attitudes taken by the respondents to measure the stress level and study habits and attitudes of the students. The researchers used the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation, r, to find out if the result of Measures of Stress and Filipino Survey on Study Habits and Attitudes taken by the working and non working students were related to each other and whether the Academic Performance of working and non working students are related to each of the Measures of Stress and Study Habits. T-Test for paired sample correlation was used to find out if the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students before they work differs from their current General Weighted Average (GWA). The t-test for two independent samples was used to find out if the current General Weigted Average (GWA) of working students differs from the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the non working students. From the results of the computation the following findings were obtained: 1) a.) Out of 40 respondents the majority population were 15 working students whose ages are 19 and 20 and with 37.5% each. Out of 40 respondents, there were 10 non working students whose ages is 20 or 25%. b.) Out of 40 respondents, there were 18 male working students 0r 45% and 22 were females or 55%. It also showed that out of 40 respondents, there were 21 male non working students or 52.2% and 19 were females or 47.5%. c.) Out of 40 respondents, the majority population were 13 working students from the College of Science (CS) or 32.5%. Out of 40 respondents, there were 9 non working students from the College of Science (CS) or 22.5%. d.) Out of 40 respondents, the majority population were 28 working students who are fourth year student or 70%. Out of 40 respondents, there were 15 fourth year students who are non working or 37.5%. 2.) a.) This clearly showed that working students had higher mean and standard deviation than the non working students in terms of the Measures of Stress. b.) This clearly showed that working students had higher mean and standard deviation than the non working students in terms of Study Habits test. 3.) This only implied that the Measures of Stress of the working students had a significant relationship to the result in Filipino Survey on Study Habits and Attitudes of working students. On the other hand, it also implied that the Measures of Stress of the non working students had a significant relationship to the result in Filipino Survey on Study Habits and Attitudes of non working students. 4.) This only implied that the Academic Performance of the working and non working students had no significant relationship to the result of Measures of Stress. 5.) Since the mean of the General Weighted Average (GWA) before the students worked was 1.967 while the mean of the current General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students was 1.986. It only implied that the General Weighted Average (GWA) before the students worked had a greater mean than the current General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students. Consequently, the General Weighted Average (GWA) before the students started working had no significant difference with their current General Weighted Average (GWA). 6.) The General Weighted Average (GWA) of the working students had no significant difference to the General Weighted Average (GWA) of the non working student. For the future researchers the researchers recommend taking into consideration other factors that could also contribute to the academic performance of the working and non working students such as goal orientation and the respondent's demographic profile. Another suggestion is that the future researchers must consider the number of hours the respondents spent sleeping. Thus, they should also consider the physical activities that their future respondents are engaged to. It is also suggested that future researchers must consider bigger population, if possible, in order to obtain more reliable results.
