Formatted contents note ABSTRACT: Urban areas face rising energy demands and environmental concerns, necessitating a shift towards renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaics (PV). This study presents a comprehensive Geographic Information System-Analytic Hierarchy Process (GIS-AHP) framework for assessing the suitability of Metropolitan Manila for solar PV deployment, considering criteria including solar radiation, climatology, location, geography, and disaster susceptibility. Methodology involves literature review, data preprocessing, expert judgement, and two-step weighted overlay analysis to prioritize criteria and parameters influencing solar PV suitability. The study generates a solar PV Deployment Suitability Map for Metropolitan Manila and estimates annual electricity generation potential. Results revealed that 31.4% of the land area (194.54km2) was deemed unsuitable/restricted, 7.78% (48.20 km2) as marginally suitable, 22.13% (137.10 km2) as suitable favourable, and 9.27% (51.24 km2) as optimal. For monocrystalline silicon PV technology, total potential energy is 54,746.63 GWh/year, with suitable/favourable areas at 27,855.29 GWh/year, moderately suitable at 13,816.39 GWh/year, marginally suitable at 2,833.49 GWh/year, and optimal at 10,241.46 GWh/year. Similarly, for polyerstalline silicon PV technology, total potential energy is 43,221.02 GWh/year , moderately suitable at 10,907.68 GWh/year, and marginally suitable and optimal contributing 2,236.96 GWh/year and 8,085.36 GWh/year, respectively. The findings reveal diverse potential across Metro Manila’s cities, offering valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders to strategically plan and implement solar energy projects. While offering a general overview, the study underscores the need for detailed site assessments to optimize resource allocation and maximize solar energy potential in urban areas.
