ABSTRACT: The study is an attempt to identify the communication patterns and program of activities of the selected women in co-operatives in Asia. Sixteen expert representatives of four national co-operative organizations from four countries participated as respondents to the survey questionnaire and as key informants to the interview. The information drawn up from this study may provide the necessary recommendation of schemes that may lead to the enhancement of the communication skills of women and eventually help them to elevate themselves to leadership positions in co-operatives. The researcher used the descriptive method. It is a combination of research techniques employing a survey, interview, observation, and accessing organizational materials to describe the demographic profile and to identify the different means and flows of how the selected women communicate and relate with each other. The patterns of communication and program of activities of selected women in co-operatives are marked by interpersonal and mediated communication. Specifically, these patterns are in the form of meetings and training sessions, telephones and computers. Face to face communications like meetings and trainings are the most noted and preferred patterns while telecommunications and computers are the most accessible. Meanwhile, other forms of communication are not fully tapped and maximized like the visualized form and mass media. The caselets, provided the microview of the applied communication principles through the program of activities by the selected women. The specific activities undertaken at the national level of the national federations are studied and reviewed in terms of processes and end-results particularly affecting the individual woman in co-operatives and the entire movement in general. In terms of flow, the communication pattern is dominantly high in the horizontal level. The leaders frequently communicate with their fellow leaders. Similarly, the members are also in frequent communication with their fellow members. This resulted to a communication gap in the organization specifically between the leaders and the members. It means that the effort to reach out neither top-down nor down up is not frequently taking place in co-operatives. The recommendation focused on the motivation for a more open dialogue and participative communication between the leaders and the members. There is a call to strengthen the democratic structure of the movement to enhance the communication skills of women and to eventually bring them to leadership position. It is also recommended to explore and maximize other forms of communication patterns through technologies (both modern and improvised) for the advancement of the members, particularly the women, and the entire co-operative movement. Finally, the researcher recommended steps or actions that are addressed to several groups and organizations in the national and Asia-regional levels enumerating the specific areas of concerns where this study is believed to be of useful reference in the future. |
