ABSTRACT. Self-medication refers to the practice of treating oneself to alleviate an illness or condition using drugs with no medical prescription and without professional supervision. It may be a way of practicing self-reliance and having an active role in health care. However, it is not common that people are also equally aware about the risks of doing it. Without adequate health teaching or prescription about the proper use of antibiotics, it may be misused and cause unwanted effects. This is especially true for antibiotics. Kee, Hayes and McCuisition (2006) state that antibiotics are substances that inhibit the growth of or kill bacteria and other microorganisms. Antibiotics have a variable dosage according to diseases, potential manifesting side-effects and they also cause drug resistance when misused. This study aimed to know prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics in Barangay 658 Zone 70, Intramuros, Manila as a basis for Guideline Development for Enhanced Client teaching. Specifically, the study determined the following: the socio-demographic-economic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, work, family income and primary source of health information; the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics of the respondents; their practice of self-medication with antibiotics in terms of frequency, conditions being treated and medication sources; the factors that lead the residents to practice self-medication with antibiotics; and the significant difference on the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics of the residents when grouped according to their socio-demographic-economic profile. The descriptive research design was used in the conduction of the study. Purposive sampling technique was then utilized to select and qualify the respondents. The researchers made their own questionnaire which was based on journals, unpublished theses and books. The said questionnaire was subjected to content validation by the faculty instructors of the College of Nursing. Statistical treatments that were used to interpret data were frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean average and chi-square formula. The findings with the greatest percentages showed that 29% of the total respondents were ages 20-26 years old, 57% were female, 61% were married, 38% were high school graduate, 55% have nonhealth-care related works, 38% have family income of less than 8,000 pesos, and 26% seek the hospital and medical centers for primary source of health information. The prevalence of self-medication resulted a percentage of 84% and out of those who are practicing self-mediation, 61% were practicing self-medication with antibiotics. Out of the 61% who practice self-medication with antibiotics, a majority of 41% stated that they seldom practice it (1-2 out of 10 occasions). For the practice of their self-medication with antibiotics, majority of the respondents who self-medicate with antibiotics, which comprise the 35% of the population, use them for cough and also a majority of 49% buy antibiotics directly from drugstores. The factor that leads the residents to practice self-medication with antibiotics with the highest mean that garnered 4.21 was misconception with an interpretation of very significant. Furthermore, civil status and source of health information both have a significant difference to the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics. With the findings and conclusions that resulted, the researchers recommend to all health care settings the need to re-emphasize the proper use of antibiotics and continue their strong advocacy for health teaching on the proper use of antibiotics; that the pharmacists put emphasis on the appropriate use of medication especially on antibiotics (e.g. proper dose, dosage, interval and the like) for all customers; that the local health departments emphasize to the residents of Barangay 658 Zone 70 to purchase medications especially antibiotics only with prescription of a licensed physician at the pharmacies that were permitted by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD); that the local health department consider re-establish the Intramuros Health Center to serve as the accessible source of health information of the residents in Intramuros; and that the future researchers evaluate the understanding and practice on self-medication of the new set of respondents with a larger population. |
