Summary, etc. ABSTRACT. A democratic country like the Philippines protects and preserves the rights of every Filipino citizen. Their inherent rights as individuals and workers are sanctioned by the State. The right to self-organization is guaranteed by our Constitution. Nurses, because of varied and complex problems and issues confronting them which individually, they cannot solve the necessity to organize themselves cannot be overemphasized. The concept of unionism is a very timely and controversial issue. This study aimed to assess the nurses' perception towards this concept: the nature, characteristics, principles, aims and activities of labor unions. This study identified the factors that affect their perception, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of labor unions as perceived by practicing nurses. This investigation will be valuable to the respondents, to the nursing association, to the nursing profession because this will create a strong political awareness among nurses and can be a basis for further action. This will help the faculty in preparing their students to the reality of nursing practice. The community as the end consumer of health services will be able to receive quality care rendered by happy and productive nurses. An assessment of the nurses' perception will allow the nursing association to review the programs related to the welfare of the caregivers. Statement of the Purpose This study attempted to assess the nurses' perception towards unionism. Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions. 1. What is the profile of nurses in terms of: a. age b. gender c. civil status d. length of hospital experience e. type of hospital f. hospital setting 2. What is the nurses' perception towards unionism? 3. How do the following demographic and work-related factors affecting nurses' perception? Demographic factors a. age b. gender c. civil status Work-related theories a. length of hospital experience b. type of hospital c. hospital setting 4. What are the advantages of organizing, joining or assisting labor unions? 5. What are the disadvantages of organizing, joining or assisting labor unions? The conceptual framework of the study was anchored on the premise that nurses like other workers have the right to self-organization. It was also based on the premise that perception is influenced by socio-cultural and economic factors. A descriptive study among using the survery approach was utilized in presenting the answers to the research problems: Bataan Provincial Hospital, Bataan Doctors' Hospital, James Gordon Memorial Hospital and Subic Legend Health and Medical Center formerly Cubi Hospitals were used as research locale. The samples of the study was composed of 170 nurses working in public and private hospitals in rural and urban setting. Purposive sampling was used. Instrument was researcher-made in consultation with experts. The questionnaire has 22 items subdivided into four principal areas: nature and characteristics, goals and objectives, principles and activities. The 4 point Likert Scale was utilized where 3 means fully aware 2 means moderately aware 1 means slightly aware and 0 means not aware. Mean scores by sub areas and across the six selected variables were computed. Percentages and rank were used in assessing the perceived advantages of labor unions. The following findings were derived from the study: 1. Nurses were generally aware of the concept of unionism. The areas where nurses were moderately aware included the Nurses of 30-34 and 35-39 years of age, male and who are -12 years in service 3. The top five advantages of labor unions were: 1. Improvement in the terms and conditions of employment 3. Assurance of full and just consideration of nurse' complaints 4. Establishment of the spirit of cooperation will be established 5. Enhancement of hospital-employee relations 4. The top five disadvantages were: 1. Occurrence of friction between management and employees 2. Creation of conflict with superiors 3. Management-employee relations will be jeopardized 4. Management will interfere with union activities 5. Additional workload for nurses The following were the recommendations based on the findings of the study: 1. Philippine government through its different branches and the nurses association should initiative steps in the direction of promoting awareness regarding the concept of unionism. They should continue to be more sensitive to the needs of nurses as well as for the promotion of their general welfare. 2. Nurses in any setting or in any type of hospital should be encouraged to discuss such topic. They should attend seminars, forums and other forms that will increase their extent of awareness regarding unionism. 3. For the academe, to review the educational programs in preparing students to be more assertive and vigilant members of the nursing profession. 4. Hospital administrators are encouraged to create an atmosphere of trust between management and employee and provide a two-way communication. 5. Further research on nurses' attitude towards unionism should be initiated and the results should be disseminated to all concerned.
