ABSTRACT. This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the assertiveness of nursing students in Academic and Related Learning experience as a basis for a learning program as observed by the nursing students themselves and the faculty. This study sought to answer the questions: to what extent do the nursing students manifest assertiveness in discussion and evaluation on their academic and related learning experiences as observed by themselves and the faculty in terms of the verbal, nonverbal, cognitive and emotional component?; is there a significant relationship between the observation of the students and faculty on the assertiveness of nursing students in the academic experience and related learning experience?; is there a significant difference between the academic experience and Related learning Experience on assertiveness as observed by the nursing students and faculty?, and based on the results of the study, what learning program can be developed to enhance student's assertiveness in the academic and Related Learning Experience? The descriptive method was utilized and a self-made questionnaire served as an instrument for collecting data. There were two sets of questionnaires: one for the students and one for the faculty. Each questionnaire consisted of two areas. Part I includes the: discussion and evaluation in the academic experience, and Part II is the Related Learning Experience, consisting of four aspects, the Student nurse - Hospital staff and student nurse-clinical instructor interactions. Purposive Sampling Technique was used, where criteria were set. For the faculty, they should be with at least 6 months experience, handled lecture and Related Learning Experience in the third and/or fourth year level. For the nursing students, only students presently enrolled in third and fourth year level were used. There were 286 respondents, 85% of the total population of 333. For the statistical treatment of data, Weighted Mean, Chi-square, and t-test were utilized. The findings showed that in the academic experience and in the related learning experiences the level of extent of nursing students manifestation of assertiveness as observed by the students and faculty is high. There is a significant relationship between the observation of the nursing students and faculty on the assertiveness of the nursing students in the academic and related learning experiences. This indicates that the nursing students and the faculty have the same observation with regard to the manifestations of assertiveness of the nursing students. There is a significant difference between the academic and Related Learning experience on assertiveness as observed by the nursing students with a higher weighted mean in the related learning experience than the academic experience, indicating that they are able to manifest assertiveness more in the clinical area. While for the faculty, there is no significant difference between the academic and Related Learning Experiences. A learning program was developed based on the two lowest ranked observations for each component in the academic and three lowest ranked observations in the Related learning experience. Based on the findings and conclusions, the researcher recommends for the nursing students to be encouraged to maintain and enhance their assertiveness skills in the academic and related learning experiences in order to progress more in these areas. The students can undergo assertiveness workshop and together with the faculty, they can incorporate the learning program in the classroom and in the area to instill and cultivate assertiveness further throughout the whole semester for all the nursing student and for this to be included in the training program of the institution. Lastly, future researchers may make use of this study for the professional nurses because assertiveness is of great importance in the healthcare delivery and it can also serve as a reference for them. |
