ABSTRACT: Interpersonal relationship involves communication which is a behavior involves physical and mental activity on the part of the receiver (the patient) and sender of the message (the nurse). It takes place every time the nurse and client meet. Though communication, the nurse is able to ascertain and meet the patient's needs. It is the instrument through which changes are affected in nursing situations. It is a continuous process experience during which meanings or messages are transmitted between the nurse and the patients. It is only through good interpersonal relationship and the development of therapeutic communication that nurses can identify the unique needs of the patients. This process allows the adaptation of in-hospital and discharge advice and education to suit individual needs by clarifying patients understanding of their condition and relevant procedure. Interpersonal relationship significantly affects patient's satisfaction. Enhancement of patient nursing care satisfaction could determine patient compliance. Efforts were made to make patients feel well-cared in terms of establishing good rapport, nurse courtesy, friendliness and solidarity, and good listening skills. Nurses vary their ability to assess the effect of their behavior on others. Some of the nurses are highly sensitive and seem to have little or no difficulty in sensing the thoughts and feelings of others, while others seem to lack this sensitivity. Communication competency as well as interpersonal relationship is evaluated in terms of the extent to which the purpose of nursing is achieved and, more specifically, in the nurse's ability to interact and communicate according to its performance of the nursing process. The study compared and correlated the performance of nurses (n=30) and observance of patient (n=80) for nurses in rendering interpersonal relationship. The study determined to seek the significant relationship between the nurses performance and the patients observation of the interpersonal relationship rendered and its implications in rendering quality care. First it determined the nurse's profile in terms of length of service, educational attainment and type of patient handled. Second, it determined the extent of the nurse's performance of the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship in each of the phases of the nursing process. Then the study determined the significant difference between the above nurse's profiles to their performance of interpersonal relationship with their patients. The researcher utilized a modified checklist questionnaires, one for the nurse-respondents and the one for the patient. These checklist-questionnaires were composed of two parts wherein the first part is a 28-item questions about the assessment of nurse-patient interpersonal relationship which was equally numbered or distributed according to the phases of the nursing process. The statistical treatment used were measures of central tendencies to get the weighted mean, two-factor design ANOVA test utilizing the 0.05 level of significance to get the significant difference between the performance of nurses on interpersonal relationship according to length of service, educational attainment and type of patient and the Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance at 0.5 level of significance was used to determine the significant relationship between the nurse's performance and patient observation of the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship. The study found out that a large percentage of the nurse-respondents (n=30) served the hospital for more than six years, highest educational attainment was BS Nursing and mostly handle mixed types of patient; The extent of significant relationship between the nurse's performance of the nurse's performance of the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship in each of the phases of the nursing process, the result was a very high extent of interpersonal relationship; At 0.05 level of significance, the issue of the significant difference between the nurse's performance and the nurse-respondents profile such as length of service, educational attainment and type of patient result showed that there is a significant difference and that profile greatly affects the performance of the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship; As to the significant relationship / agreement between the nurse's performance and patient's observation of the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship, statistical analysis showed very high significance or agreement for the assessment phase items, while moderately agreement / relationship for the implementation and evaluation, and lastly low significant relationship or agreement for the planning phase. |
