ABSTRACT. Statement of Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to look into the strength of emotional intelligence and job morale as determinants of job performance among nurses in selected hospitals in Makati City. It also aimed at determining the relation of respondents' personal profile variables on the emotional intelligence, job morale and job performance of nurses. More specifically this answered the following questions: 1. What is the personal profile of nurses in terms of : a. sex b. age c. work experience d. educational attainment e. economic status 2. What is the profile of nurses' in terms of : a. emotional intelligence b. job morale c. job performance 3. Is there a significant relationship between the nurses' personal profile variables and each of the following: a. emotional intelligence b. job morale c. job performance 4. Are there significant effects of emotional intelligence and job morale on the job performance of nurses? The study set forth the following hypotheses: 1. There is no significant relationship between the nurses' personal variables and each of the following: a. emotional intelligence b. job morale c. job performance 2. There are no significant effects of emotional intelligence and job morale on the job performance of nurses. The descriptive research was employed in this study utilizing correlational and predictive techniques in looking into the relationship of variables and possible effect of emotional intelligence and job morale on the job performance of nurses. A total of 101 nurses from public hospitals in Makati City which comprised 100 percent of the population were all considered as respondents of this study. The questionnaire was the major data gathering tool used in this study. The data gathered were coded and entered into a data matrix for statistical treatment using the SPSS/PC, a Statistical Program for Social Sciences. For the descriptive presentation of the data, the frequency and percentage were used particularly in dealing with nominal data generated by variables sex, and educational attainment. For age, work experience and economic status, the mean and standard deviation were used. To determine the relation of profile variables on the emotional intelligence, job morale and performance of nurses, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula was used. To find the strength of emotional intelligence and morale as determinants of job performance of nurses; the stepwise multiple regression analysis was used. Findings: The salient findings of the study are: 1. Profile of Nurses Majority of the respondents are female ( 84.16%). Majority are Bachelors Degree holders in Nursing without M.A. units (70.30%). On the average, the respondents is 29.52 years of age with 5.63 years of work experience and with an average of three thousand sixty pesos (P3,060.00) monthly budget for each member of the household as an indicator of economic status. 2. Emotional Intelligence of Nurses The nurses emotional intelligence level is moderate ( X = 28.82) which means that they need some development in the different areas of emotional competencies. They are also moderate ( need some development ) in emotional awareness, empathy, self motivation, the ability to manage one's emotion, and to coach other's emotions. 3. Job Morale of Nurses The job morale of nurses is high as indicated by the average mean ( X= 5.34). 4. Job Performance of Nurses The job performance of nurses, on the whole is very satisfactory. They have very satisfactory performance in their duties and functions ( X=5.22) and very satisfactory in their work behavior ( X=5.34). 5. Relation of Profile Variables on Emotional Intelligence, Morale, and job Performance of Nurses. Sex, age, job experience, economic status, and educational attainment of nurses have no significant relation to their emotional intelligence, job morale and job performance. The obtained coefficients of correlation were very low and negligible. The probability values failed to reach the 0.5 level of significance and so the null hypothesis is accepted. 6. Determinants of Job Performance The emotional intelligence with .334796 beta coefficients and job morale with .403749 beta coefficients are determinants or predictors of job performance of nurses. The probability values were highly significant (P=.004 and .0001 respectively). The null hypothesis is rejected. Conclusions: The findings lead to the following conclusions: 1. The null hypothesis is accepted that there is no significant relationship between the nurses' profile variables and each of the following: a. emotional intelligence b. job morale c. job performance 2. The null hypothesis is rejected, thus, revealed that there are significant effects of emotional intelligence and job morale on the job performance of nurses. a. Emotional intelligence is a significant determinant of job performance of nurses. b. Job morale is a significant determinant of job performance of nurses. 3. The nurses need some development in all areas of emotional competencies. They have moderate ability in regulating or coping with emotions. 4. The job morale of nurses is generally high. 5. The nurses performed very satisfactory in the performance of their duties and functions. Their work behavior is similarly very satisfactory. Recommendations: The study's findings and conclusions lead to the following recommendations: 1. Include the emotional intelligence, being a determinant of job performance, as another criterion in hiring nurses for health care service. 2. Develop an education and training program for awareness and development of emotional intelligence of the nursing staff and other health care service providers. Such would benefit the patients in terms of better quality health care service and will help create a more desirable social system in the organization. 3. Review some factors that will help raise the job morale of nurses. This should include salaries, incentives and other benefits, work relationship, physical environment, and promotion policy. 4. Job performance of nurses can be improved by encouraging nurses to go back to school through scholarship grants, local and foreign. 5. Conduct a study on the emotional intelligence, job satisfaction and working condition of medical personnel in relation to their job morale and job performance as rated by the immediate supervisors. This will serve as a vital input for the management in achieving a total quality service in the hospital. |
