ABSTRACT: This study sought to evaluate the competency level on safety and quality nursing care of intensive care unit nursing staff in selected private hospitals. Specifically, this study answered the following questions: What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, and length of service?; What is the level of competency of the respondents in terms of safety and quality nursing care according to their self evaluation and head nurse's evaluation?; What are the strengths and weaknesses of the respondents in terms of safety and quality nursing care?; Is there a significant relationship between the demographic profile and the competency level of safety and quality nursing care according to self evaluation and head nurse's evaluation?; Is there a significant difference between the self-evaluation results and the head nurse's evaluation?; What guidelines to enhance and maintain safety and quality nursing care can be derived based on the results of the study? The mentioned safety and quality nursing care consists of the following patient safety goals: Patient Identification, Nurses Communication with Other Healthcare Providers, Medication Safety, Healthcare Associated Infections, Reducing Risk of Harm from Patient Falls, Involving Patient and Significant Others in their Care, Reducing Pressure Ulcers, and Safe Use of Equipment. Convenience sampling technique was used to obtain the sample from the entire population. The sample consists of 39 intensive care unit staff nurses and 4 head nurses from the following private hospitals: Makati Medical Center (MMC), University of Perpetual Help DALTA Medical Center (UPHDMC), and UPH-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical Center. The main research tool used to conduct the study is a questionnaire that evaluates the level of competency in terms of safety and quality nursing care according to staff nurses self-evaluation and their head nurses evaluation. The tool was developed based on a patient safety checklist, and was tested and validated by two (2) tool validators. According to the self evaluation of the staff nurses and their head nurses evaluation in terms safety and quality nursing care, the competency level of these intensive care unit nurses are on the excellent level. In addition, competency level on all patient safety goals is excellent which means that all of the safety goals are their strengths and no weak point is noted. Both evaluation revealed that their strongest area is the Medication Safety and the two bottom areas among their strengths are the Patient Identification and Involving Patients and Significant Others in their Care. The data gathered revealed that there is no significant relationship between the demographic profiles of the staff nurses and their level of competency. It was also noted that there is no significant difference between the staff nurses evaluation and their head nurses evaluation of their level of competency in terms of safety and quality nursing care. The researchers highly recommend that staff nurses adhere to patient safety guidelines and enhance their knowledge and skills that will improve patient safety. The researchers suggest that nursing administrators involve their staff nurses in activities that will enhance their competency level on patient safety and quality nursing care, and strictly implement patient safety guidelines. Nursing students may utilize the guideline from this study to improve their clinical duty performance and they are also encouraged to study the factors that affect patient safety and quality nursing care. Future researchers are encouraged to evaluate the guideline developed from the study. And they may also replicate it and consider the study's limitation on other variables that affect patient safety and quality nursing care. |
