ABSTRACT: The main focus of this research is to determine the resourcefulness skills of senior nursing students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila school year 2008-2009 as basis for the development of nursing care guidelines. Specifically, it sought the resourcefulness skills of the respondents in rendering physical care to their patients in terms of splinting, restraining, body wastes disposal, and positioning. Moreover, the researchers looked for the significant relationship that exists between the resourcefulness skills and the physical care rendered by the respondents. The result of this study was used as a basis for the development of nursing care guidelines to improve the delivery of health services. Descriptive research is designed to achieve more information about the characteristics with the particular field of study. Under the subcategories of descriptive research in the correlational research. Correlational research shows the relationship between two or more variables in which the researchers can seek to explain and predict relationship among variables or test the relationship proposed by theoretical preposition. In order for the researchers to be able to emphasize the significance and importance of the study, descriptive correlational research will be used. Through this method, the relationship between the resourcefulness skills and physical care rendered will be defined. Simple Random Sampling was utilized to obtain data from a sample of the entire population. The data that will reveal the resourcefulness skills of the senior nursing students will be gathered through observation and through the responses of 194 students which represents 92.82% of the total population with the exception of the five (5) researchers and the 10 students who will be participating in the pre-testing. Those who will take part in the said pre-testing will also be randomly selected. The main instrument used in gathering data for the study is a questionnaire which served as the tool for determining the resourcefulness skills of the respondents. The researchers reviewed previous studies similar to the present one and looked from already been used and validated diagnostic tool yet failed to find a suitable questionnaire. Thus, the researchers developed a tool that was patterned from the given skills of resourcefulness through the utilization of the related literature and had it tested and validated by experts. Moreover, for the statistical treatment of data, the statistical measures that were used are the weighted mean and Pearson's r test. The weighted mean was used to determine the respondent's resourcefulness skills in splinting, restraining, body wastes, and positioning. While the Pearson's r test was used to determine if there is an existing relationship between the resourcefulness skills and physical care rendered to patients in the ICU. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that the nursing students have high level of resourcefulness skills in terms of the four areas given. In accordance to ranking skills in terms of body wastes disposal got the highest level, next are in terms of positioning, then come splinting, and finally restraining. As a result from the data gathered, there is a significant relationship between the resourcefulness skills and physical care rendered. It is to be anticipated since all the knowledge and skills acquired by the students are expected to be used in rendering the utmost care the patient warrants in any setting. For the final output of the study, the researchers had come up with a Nursing Care Guidelines with the purpose of providing the nursing students with several resourcefulness skills that will lead them in rendering better care in spite of the limited supplies and resources. |
