ABSTRACT: The main focus of this research is to assess knowledge and attitudes of mothers on childhood immunization in selected barangays of Earnshaw Health Center as a basis for health education information dissemination. This study was undertaken to answer the following questions: 1.) What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to: 1.1 Educational Attainment 1.2 Socio Economic status? 2.) What is the knowledge of mothers on childhood ionization in terms of the following: 2.1 Immunization Program and Implementing Agency of the Government 2.2 Importance, indication and contraindication in childhood immunization 2.3 Schedule of Immunization, number of doses, and eligible age for child immunization 2.4 Side effects of immunization 3.) What is the attitude of mothers on childhood ionization in terms of the following: 3.1 Valuing the purpose of immunization of the children 3.2 Valuing the role of health care professionals in the immunization program 3.3 Becoming compliant with the immunization schedule 3.4 Becoming tolerant of or accepting the side effects of immunization on children 4. Is there a significant relationship on the knowledge and attitudes of mothers on childhood immunization? 5.) Is there a significant difference on the knowledge of mothers on childhood immunization when grouped according to the demographic data? 6.) Is there a significant difference on the attitude of mothers on childhood immunization when grouped according to the demographic data? 7.) What kind of health education information - dissemination for mothers on childhood immunization can be developed based on the result of the study? Disease prevention is the key to public health. This descriptive correlational study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitudes on childhood immunization of mothers in selected barangays at Earnshaw Health Center. A total of randomly selected sixty-nine mothers who had Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunized infants who are still on schedule for the first Pertussis, and Tetanus (DPT) shot for the year 2008 were chosen from the barangays under the Earnshaw Health Center. A structured questionnaire was used to interview the respondents by visiting the households. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to described knowledge level, attitudes, and other variables-educational attainment status, type of work, and monthly family income while the associations between these factors were determined by using Pearson r and ANOVA Quantitative findings showed that majority of the mothers were unemployed and high school graduates, data suggested that there was a significant difference on the knowledge and attitudes of mothers when grouped according to educational attainment but no significant difference when grouped according to socio-economic status. Respondents possessed very good knowledge as well as very favorable attitude on childhood immunization as the findings suggested that the more knowledgeable on immunization the respondents are, the more favorable their attitude towards immunization. |
