ABSTRACT: This study sought to determine the emotional competence of staff nurses and its relationship to clinical skills as a basis for staff development program. Specifically, this study answered the following questions: What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of Age, Gender, Civil Status, Length of Experience, Socioeconomic Status, and Area of Assignment; What is the emotional competence of the respondents in terms of Personal Competence such as Self Awareness, Self Regulation and Self Motivation, and Social Competence such as Social Awareness and Social Skills; What is the clinical skills of the respondents in terms of caring and communication; Is there a significant relationship between emotional competence and the demographic profile of the respondents; Is there a significant relationship between emotional competence and clinical skills of the respondents in terms of Caring and Communication; and Based on the study, what guidelines for staff development program can be formulated regarding emotional competence and its relationship to the clinical skills provided by the respondents? Purposive Sampling Technique was utilized to obtain the needed data based on the belief that the researchers' knowledge about the population can be used to handpick sample members. The staff nurses were selected considering the criteria, which are: 1. Must be a registered nurse; 2. Must be from 21 - 59 years old; 3. Working as a staff nurse at Tondo Medical Center; 4. Must be a staff nurse from any wards except special wards; and must be willing to participate and cooperate in the study. A total of 34 staff nurses from one public hospital, namely Tondo Medical Center (YMC) satisfied the said criteria. The main instrument in gathering the data for this study is a three-part self-ade questionnaire, which was validated by experts. The Frequency and percentage Distribution Table, General Weighted Mean, and Chi Square, were used in order to obtain the needed results. After conducting the research, the researchers were able to find out that most of the respondents belong to the 22-25 age groups, which comprises 44% of the whole population. 35% of the respondents belong to the 26 - 29 group. 12% of the population belongs to the 30 - 33age group. 6% are the respondents from the 34 - 37 years old age group, 3% respondents is from the 46 - 49 years old age group. Meanwhile, 0% respondents came from the 38 to 41 and 42 to 45 years old age group. 59% of the respondents were male and 41% were female. Likewise, 71% of the population are single and the other are married. Moreover in terms of length of experience 6 of the respondents have been working for 0 to 1 year, 11 of them for 1 to 2 years, 3 for 2 to 5 years and above. The least number of respondents are those who are from the groups who answered they have been working from 2 to 3 years. On the other hand, in terms of Average monthly income 35% of the respondents (12) obtained the highest percentage who have an average monthly net salary of P10,001 to P15,000, 32% (11) of them said they earn P15,001-P20,000, 30% (10) earn P10,000 and below, 3% (1) have an average monthly income of P20,001 to p25,000. The least number of respondents have an average monthly income of more than P25,000 obtaining 0% (0). In terms of area of assignment, 20% of the respondents were from Pay Ward. On the other hand, 17.5% came from OB and Surgery Wards. 15% came from Medicine and Pediatric Wards, while, 12% are from the ENT ward. Last, 3% answered from all areas. The Emotional Competence of staff nurses were been weighted in terms of personal and social competencies. The personal competence have five domains which were as follow: the general weighted mean level of emotional competence of respondents in terms of self-regulation obtained a 3.38, revealing a very high level of emotional competence in this aspect. While with the general weighted mean level of emotional competence of respondents in terms of self-motivation, the general weighted mean is 3.36, revealing a very high level of emotional competence in this aspect. On the other hand, 3.24, revealing a very high level, is the general weighted mean level of emotional competence of respondents in terms of social awareness. In terms of social skill aspect of emotional competence the gathered the general weighted mean is 3.27, which presents a very high level of emotional competence. Meanwhile, with social competence the weighted means were as follows: the weighted mean of the level of competence in relation to the communication skills of the staff nurses which has been evaluated through the help of the patients was 3.38%; and in relation to staff nurses caring skills is 3.26. In the relationship between emotional competence and the demographic data of the respondents chi square was used and the data obtained were as follow: there is no significant relationship between the age of staff nurses and their emotional competence; there is no significant relationship between the gender of staff nurses and their emotional competence; there is no significant relationship between the civil status of staff nurses and their emotional competence; there is no significant relationship between the length of experience of staff nurses and their emotional competence; there is no significant relationship between the socioeconomic status of staff nurses and their emotional competence; there is no significant relationship between the area of assignment of staff nurses and their emotional competence. The same statistical treatment, chi-square, was used to determine the relationship between the emotional competence and the clinical skills of staff nurses. The results gathered were as follows at 0.05 level of significance, the value of X2 is 40.11 which is less than the computed value of the X2 which is 56.19, therefore the null hypothesis is rejected meaning to say that there is a significant relationship between emotional competence and the communication skills of the staff nurses; and also, there is a significant relationship between emotional competence and the caring skills of the staff nurses, with 0.05 level of significance, the value of X2 is. 40.11 which is less than the computed value of the X2 which is 73.71, therefore the null hypothesis is rejected. Based from the findings and conclusion of the study, recommendations were made. A framework for staff development program was developed based from the assessed level of emotional competence of staff nurses that needs to be enhanced. This aims to develop the emotional aspect of the staff nurse by a series of seminar-workshops that will further develop their personal & social awareness and will make them understand and relate to the feeling of others, be it the patients or co-workers or other people that they deal with in their every lives. The main objective of the program is to uplift the emotional competence of staff nurses with regards to their personal and social competence. It is a two-day seminar with 6 hours of lecture-discussion in a day from 8AM to 2PM with intermittent breaks along the day which will be held at a multimedia or seminar room of the hospitals. Guest speakers who have shown expertise about the concerned topic would be cordially invited to preside the lecture-discussion/s. |
