ABSTRACT: This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the knowledge and practice on breast self-examination as a basis for women's health promotional campaign. This study sought to answer the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age educational attainment and performance of breast self-examination; the level of knowledge of the respondents on breast self-examination in terms of purpose and procedure; and the degree of practice on breast self-examination of those respondents who perform it. The researcher also tested the significant difference in the level of knowledge of the respondents on breast self-examination in terms of purpose and procedure when they are grouped according to their profile variables; the significant difference in the degree of practice on breast self-examination of those respondents who perform it when they are grouped according to their profile variables; the significant relationship between the level of knowledge in terms of purpose and procedure and the degree of practice on breast self-examination of those respondents who perform it. Based on the findings, a women's health promotional campaign was proposed. The descriptive and correlational research designs were utilized and a self-made questionnaire served as an instrument for collecting data. It consisted of 3 areas. Part 1 is the profile of the respondents, Part II assessed the level of knowledge of the respondents, consisting of two aspects, Letter A for the Purpose of BSE and Letter B for the Procedure of BSE. Part III assessed the degree of practice on BSE of those respondents who perform it in terms of the steps of BSE. The statistical instruments used were Frequency and Percentage Distribution, Mean Score, Weighted Mean, t-test, Pearson-r and t-test for r. Slovin's formula was utilized in determining the number of respondents and simple random sampling was used. There were 377 respondents. The findings showed that in the profile of respondents in terms of age, majority (75.86%) belong to the 20 - 35 years old, in terms of educational attainment, mostly (70.82%) are undergraduate, and with regards to performance of BSE, a larger population of the respondents are performer or doing breast self examination (71.09%). In the level of knowledge of the respondents on BSE in terms of purpose and procedure, the over-all level is high. The highest percentage of correct answer on the level of knowledge in terms of purpose is 99.73 percent while the lowest is 5.84 percent. On the other hand, the highest percentage that correctly answered the questions for the level of knowledge in terms of procedure is 92.04 percent whereas the lowest is 11.14 percent. The degree of practice of the respondents who perform BSE is generally low, while the degree of practice per item varies from low to high. There is a significant difference in the level of knowledge in terms of purpose when grouped according to age and educational attainment. This means that age and educational attainment matter in gaining knowledge about the purpose of BSE. For the performance of BSE, there is no significant difference in the level of knowledge in terms of purpose between the performer and non-performers of BSE. This implies that performance of BSE is not influenced by the knowledge about the purpose of BSE. In the level of knowledge in terms of procedure, there is a significant difference when the variables are grouped according to age and performance of BSE, and there is no significant difference in the level of knowledge in terms of procedure when they are grouped according to their educational attainment. This means that educational attainment is not a contributing factor in the knowledge of BSE in terms of procedure, while age and performance of BSE matters. There is no significant difference in the degree of practice of those who perform BSE when grouped according to their profile. This implies that the age and educational attainment are not considerable factors that influence a woman to practice BSE. There is no significant relationship between practice and knowledge in terms of purpose and procedure. Moreover, there is no to little magnitude of correlation among the identified variables. A health educational campaign on BSE was developed based on the significant difference and relationships in the degree of practice between the profile variables and the result of the level of knowledge with low interpretations. Based on the findings and conclusions, the researcher recommends for the women in general to attend the lectures and actual demonstrations of BSE procedure. They can subsequently teach the significant others how to do the BSE procedure and share the knowledge to their loved ones, relatives and friends. The company administrator can help the company clinic staff to implement the campaign on BSE and encourage the employees to attend the learning sessions. The company clinic can also include BSE Campaign Program in their clinic programs and use the output of this study as their material in campaigning for BSE. Lastly, future researchers may conduct a Quasi experimental research and may make use of this study as reference material and as a basis for future research. |
