ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the level of caring attitude and organizational commitment of nursing faculty of the Lyceum of the Philippines University as basis for the development of values enhancement program. This study sought to answer the questions: what are the levels of caring attitude of nursing faculty based on Jean Watson's carative factors: humanistic altruistic system of values instillation of faith and hope, cultivation of sensitivity to one's self and others, development of a helping-trust relationship; promotion and acceptance of the expression of positive and negative feelings; systematic use of scientific problem solving method for decision making; promotion of interpersonal teaching and learning; provision for supportive, protective and corrective mental, physical, socio-cultural and spiritual environment; assistance with gratification of human needs and; allowance for existential-phenomenological forces?, what are the levels of organizational commitment of nursing faculty in terms of effective normative and; continuance domains?, is there any significant relationship between the caring attitude based on Jean Watson's Ten Carative Factors and Allen and Meyer's Organizational Commitment in terms of effective, normative and continuance domains. The study covered 100 percent or 118 nursing faculty of Lyceum of the Philippines University in Batangas City who are presently employed during the period of May-July 2009. The descriptive correlational design was used in this study. A self-structured questionnaire for caring attitude was used while Allen and Meyer's instrument was adapted to assess the nursing faculty's commitment. The data collected were analyzed and interpreted using weighted mean and ranking treated data, and pearson product moment of correlation was used to test the hypothesis. Findings revealed that the respondents exhibit a very high level of caring attitude when dealing with n, co-workers and others except for promotion and acceptance of the expression of the positive and negative feelings where nursing faculty demonstrated only a high level. On the contrary, respondents show commitment only to a high level to the organization they are currently working. Caring attitudes of nursing faculty are not significantly related to their commitment with the organization since the coefficient correlation r is less than the critical value at 0.05 level of significance, therefore the null hypothesis is accepted. A proposed program was focused on enhancing caring attitude of nursing faculty and their level of organizational commitment in terms of normative and continuance domain. Recommendations were centered on development of a tool that will assess nursing faculty's concerns regarding appraisal of faculty performance development of faculty's concerns regarding appraisal of faculty performance, development of faculty's incentives and reward system, review of recruitment selection and placement system, and career counseling mechanism, development of mentoring programs for the newcomers, support system and feedback mechanism. |
