ABSTRACT: This study focuses on the personality adjustment and its relationship to performance of selected Enlisted Personnel assigned in the combat field units of 2nd Infantry Division, Philippine Army (2ID, PA). Specifically, the researcher measured the relationship of personality adjustment and performance of the respondents in the conduct of duty. Also, the appropriate clinical transformation program was developed based on the findings of the study. In order to measure the personality adjustment of the selected Private First Class Personnel, the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey (GZTS) was administered to measure the personality adjustment of the soldiers. On the other hand, the Enlisted Personnel Evaluation Mark (EPEM) was used to assess the level of performance. The study employed the purposive sampling research design. The respondents of the study were the selected Personnel of the Philippine Army who belonged to Class 07-2013 of the Restructured Reenlistment System Training of the Division Training Unit 2nd Infantry Division, Philippine Army (2nd ID,PA). The 85 respondents of the study were screened through purposive sampling. Furthermore, the respondents were grouped according to age based on Daniel Levinson's Stages of Adulthood and also grouped according to civil status. Findings showed that the stage of Entering Adult World covering the ages 23-28 years old has the highest percentage of Enlisted Personnel entering the military combat while the stage of Mid-Life Transition ranging from 41-45 years old has the lowest percentage of Enlisted Personnel entering the military combat. The stage of Entering Adult World obtained the highest percentage of Army soldiers who are single while the stage of Settling Down ranging from ages 34-40 years old obtained the highest percentage of married Army soldiers. The personality maladjustment of Army soldiers is caused by lack of physical energy, impulsiveness, hesitation to speak, difficulty to establish rapport with others and poor reflection. On the other hand, the Army soldiers displayed good personality adjustments based on their optimistic attitude, fairness, friendliness, tolerant and understanding of people and possessed masculine characteristics required for male combatant. The Army soldiers are evaluated by their Commanders with over-all outstanding level of performance in the eleven (11) performance criteria. When the respondents are grouped according to Age and Civil Status only in the scale of Personal Relations where the difference found to be significant. Young adults Army soldiers while still single enjoyed the company of their friends and established an intimate relationship with the opposite sex. Married Army soldiers are much focused in developing a satisfying relationship with their family and the community they served for. There is no significant relationship between the personality adjustment and performance of the Army soldiers because the personality test used in this study does not predict the outcome of Army soldier's performance. Based from the findings of the study, the following clinical transformational programs are therefore recommended to the AFP Mental Health Team: Physical Fitness to attain strong physical endurance: Team Building to freely discuss the thoughts, feelings, and experiences with one another, and professional license counselors and Commanders shall extend assistance by providing army and family and family life counseling to the emotionally disturbed soldiers. In conclusion, there is no significant relationship between the personality adjustment and performance of the Army soldiers because the personality test does not predict significantly the outcome Army soldiers' performance. In accordance with the findings and conclusions of the study, the following are therefore recommended: that the relationship between personality adjustment and job performance should be studied using larger samples in various branches of Armed Forces of the Philippines, namely Philippine Army, Philippine Navy, and Philippine Air Force; that the findings of this study could serve as an initial step in modifying the existing performance criteria in the Enlisted Personnel Evaluation Mark (EPEM) in conformity to the required personality traits of soldiers as measured by Guilford-Zimmermann Temperament Survey (GZTS): and that a research study shall be conducted to measure the effectiveness of clinical transformational program in the actual performance of Army soldiers. |
