ABSTRACT: Short Messages Service or SMS in short, is one of the most popular services being used by mobile subscribers. With an estimate of 1-2 billion SMS transactions routed daily, this makes the country as the text capital of the world. The use of SMS services to deliver critical alerts, in cases of system downtime, is being explored in one telecommunication industry. The objective is to increase reaction time of concerned groups for cases of downtime or system failures. Downtime events potentially lead to high revenue exposures and customer dissatisfaction. Since there are many core systems in the company, however, the need for an interchange format to be used by SMS-MAS is crucial. Among the choices were CORBA, XML, ASN, SGML and XDR. These standards are currently used by developers also tools, programming languages and documentations are readily available. The main objective of this study is to find the most suitable standard among CORBA, XML, ASN, SGML and XDR to be used as interchange format for the SMS- Messaging Alerts System. The significance of this study is emphasized on different sectors: industry, fellow professionals, the academe, and the organization. The general methods used for this study are documentary (descriptive) and experimental. Documentary analysis involves gathering information by examining related records and documents. This method was used for qualitative analysis. Experimental method was used for testing/ benchmarking programs of each standard. Evaluation was categorized into two: qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Qualitative evaluation includes sub categories: data transport, technical development and support, representation and encoding, software compatibility, portability and technological change. Quantitative evaluation composed of two categories: processing performance and output buffer size. For quantitative evaluation, benchmarking programs for each standard were made and sample trials were executed. This benchmarking procedures store necessary information such as processing speed in seconds, and output buffer size, to be used for analysis. Afterwards, analysis was performed. One way ANOVA tests were computed and it showed that there is a significant difference, in terms of processing performance, among the standards. Moreover, a simple survey was conducted in order to determine the most suitable open data interchange standard to be used for SMS-MAS. Questionnaires, via e-mail, were sent to various user groups of SMS-MAS such as developers, managers, supervisors, and operation personnel. Next, factor rating method was used to compute particular weights for each standard based on the results of survey, quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Based on the results of computation, the researcher concluded that the most suitable open data interchange standard to be used in SMS-MAS is XML. Finally, the researcher recommends that further study shall be conducted considering items such as additional standards for investigation, tests on different platform and using different programming languages. Lastly, the researcher encourages further study on other open source concepts. |
