ABSTRACT: Ductile cast-iron also known as nodular or spherulitic-graphite cast is the youngest among the family of cast iron. It differs from gray iron, white iron and malleable iron by the addition of very small and definite amount of magnesium and or cerium to the molten iron in the process called nodulizing. Ductile iron is very well recognized and used in several mechanical engineering applications in many countries in Asia like Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Mainland China and even in North America, Europe and Australia. This is because of the fact that it can be easily casts into any desired shape that makes it cheaper than other cast steel. It is amenable to heat treatment to improve its mechanical properties aside from its good damping properties. The objective of the study is to utilize ductile iron as a structural material like steel. Ductile cast-iron has been used locally in the construction industry only in the making of large and long pipelines, ordinary small pipes and tubes and even on tunnel walls. The study dealt with the analysis of the mechanical properties of ductile iron to be used particularly as a flexural member. The study conducted actual tests on the flexural properties of ductile cast-iron. It focused on the evaluation and interpretation of the results in tension test, deflection test and shear test on a ductile cast-iron specimen conducted at the Physical and Mechanical Metallurgical Laboratory of the Metals Industry Research and Development Center of the Department of Science and Technology in Bicutan, Taguig City. Mechanical properties of ductile iron were gathered, compiled and condensed from the Ductile Iron Handbook and Metals Handbook, Properties and Selection: Irons and Steel by the American Society for Metals and the American Foundrymen's Society Inc. after which said properties were compared to steel. After a thorough analysis of the results of the tests conducted, and an evaluation of the established mechanical properties of ductile cast-iron, it was finally compared to the properties of steel. Wide applications of ductile iron in machineries and industries including its other mechanical engineering applications were taken into considerations in the study. With all these engineering evaluations, tests and comparisons made between ductile iron and steel, it was concluded that ductile iron can be a good structural material that will match steel. Ductile iron proved that it can be a good replacement for steel provided that structural members and its strength requirements are properly identified for proper steel replacements. Steel has been widely and commonly used in structural designing so much so that a material that can match its engineering properties like ductile iron must be taken advantage of. |
