ABSTRACT: Nowadays, design and construction firms are discovering the vast benefits one can get from Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) technology. However, CADD's full potential is not well explored since its usage is limited only to the preparation of construction drawings. This study aims to develop a program in construction estimates using this type of technology. It focuses on the utilization of the CADD system in computing for the necessary quantity take-off of materials needed for specific concrete and masonry works for vertical structures. This was done by harnessing CADD's hidden potential through the development of a third party application that was introduced within its inherent environment paving the way for a paperless estimating process. The program was done using the AutoLISP computer language that enabled users to directly perform the estimating process in the CADD window right after the necessary drawings and details needed are completed. Pertinent geometrical data needed was supplied by CADD by accessing its vast database of information loaded in every file of CADD working drawings. An Iterative Method of Research, based from action research principles was used by the researcher in the development and validation of the said program. The researcher used the existing AutoCAD software, and the estimating standards, factors, formulas, and procedures employed at the Project Management Office (PMO) of the Bulacan State University, the researcher's workplace, in the development of the program. A series of tests were conducted to validate the program's reliability, speed, user-friendliness, and applicability. The result of this study yielded a positive outcome. After a series of tests and revisions in the program's structure, correcting flaws and errors, the program was highly accepted and commended for its reliability, speed, user-friendliness, applicability, and its great potential as an alternative to the traditional pen and paper estimating method. The study concludes that CADD can be used to improve the estimating system of design and construction firms such as the PMO. Its fast and reliable outputs and user-friendly quality made the long and tedious process of estimating easier and less erroneous. The researcher recommends that further study be conducted to use other CADD software; to take advantage of CADD's 3D modeling capabilities instead of its 2D environment; to automatically integrate CADD-generated estimating outputs to other Windows-based office and construction software; and to improve the program by adding other estimating work items and outputs. |
