Formatted contents note ABSTRACT: Railway crossings are the intersection of roads and railway tracks. The collision between vehicles and trains at railway crossings of the Philippine National Railway causes accidents that lead to injuries, damage to properties, and even death. Engineering interventions at railway crossings concerning road users from España to Sta. Mesa Station was conducted to address railway crossing issues. The number of violations, duration of time, and time of the day are the primary variables used in the study. Railway crossings were evaluated through an observation checklist before the data-gathering period to identify the condition and characteristics of existing warning signs installed at railway crossings. The total warning time and the number of violations at each railway crossing that qualified specific criteria were determined and tallied through observation and video recording. Results showed warning signs meet the standards set by the DPWH Highway Safety Design Standards Part 2: Road Signs and Pavement Markings, while there were no clear specifications and standards intended for warning signals. Aside from that data, analyzed using Pearson Correlation Test showed that warning time and violations have a positive correlation. Indicating that longer warning time resulted in more violations committed. Most road users are likely to violate train warning at night due to lightning conditions in the area as indicated by the Chi-square Test result. Moreover, the effectiveness of warning signs and signals in maintaining safety at railway crossings depends on the design. Installation, adherence to standards, and maintenance. The number of violations that may lead to accidents will lessen through proper planning and design of railway crossings.
