Abstract<br/><br/> This descriptive-correlational study was conducted to determine the perceived issues in the utilization of online learning and the personal characteristics of 331 nursing students at a selected Higher Education Institution in Cavite as input for institutionalized policy formulation. They were selected using a stratified random sampling method.<br/> <br/> Data were gathered using an adapted and modified questionnaire by Muilenburg and Berg (2005) entitled, "Student Barriers to Online Learning Survey" for which the researcher was given approval/permission for its use and modifications by the original authors. Frequency and percentage distribution were used to determine the distribution of the respondents according to their profiles as to Self-Reported Ethnicity; Type of Learning Institution Attended; The number of online courses completed; The Number of Online Courses Dropped; The Likelihood of Taking a Future Online Course, and Experience of Prejudicial Treatment in the Traditional Classroom Due to Cultural Background, Disability, or Other Personal Characteristics; Weighted means were used to determine the profile characteristics of the nursing student respondents in terms of ability and confidence with online learning technology; learning effectiveness in the online environment; and online learning enjoyment. It was used to measure the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the following factors in the utilization of online learning; Spearman's Rho was used to determine the significant relationship between the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the factors in the utilization of online learning and ability and confidence with online learning technology, learning effectiveness in the online environment, and online learning enjoyment. The institutionalized policy on online learning was formulated from all the findings: items with a high score or very high extent of significance (scores above 2.00); and findings of significant difference between the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the following factors in the utilization of online learning when they are grouped according to their profile characteristics.<br/><br/> Results showed that most of the students are Tagalog: from an undergraduate college; have completed 1-10 online courses; have not dropped any online courses; were ambivalent in the likelihood of taking a future online course; have no experience of prejudicial treatment in the traditional classroom due to cultural background, disability, or other personal characteristics; there is a very high level of Ability and Confidence in Online Learning Technology; Learning Effectiveness in The Online Environment; and Online Learning Enjoyment; there is a low extent of perception of the student nurse regarding the extent of the significance of the following issues in the utilization of online learning: administrative/instructor; social interactions; academic skills; technical skills; learner motivation; time and support for studies; cost and access to the Internet; and technical problems; the null hypothesis was accepted: at the point where there are no significant relationships between the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the issues in the utilization of online learning (Administrative/Instructor Issues, Social Interactions, Academic Skills, Technical Skills, Learner Motivation, Time and Support for Studies, Cost and Access to the Internet, 2 and Technical Problems) and the ability and confidence with online learning technology, and the learning effectiveness of online environment; the null hypothesis was also accepted at the point where there are no significant relationships between the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the issues in the utilization of online learning (Administrative/Instructor Issues, Social Interactions, Academic Skills, Technical Skills, Learner Motivation, Time and Support for Studies, Cost and Access to the Internet, and Technical Problems) and the student's online learning enjoyment; and it was rejected at the point where there is a significant relationship between the perception of the student nurse respondents regarding the extent of the significance of the Cost and Access to the Internet issues in the utilization of online learning and the learning effectiveness of online environment.<br/><br/> It was recommended that student nurses/students must continuously become knowledgeable about the different factors that can affect their utilization of online learning, also, they must always anticipate the factors that can help them become affected by learning barriers that would make them feel frustrated or unwilling and cannot achieve their learning goals; nurse educators to utilize the output of this study which is an institutionalized policy formulation, that can pave the way for educators to be guided on how to deal with their students while in an online learning process, specifically focusing on their differences to ensure an effective learning process; school administrators to have the knowledge and awareness about the factors that can affect their student's online learning process. This can be used as their basis for the additional formulation of institutionalized policy or programs like the output that was developed based on the findings of this study, it will help them how to prevent or avoid problems in terms of online learning students; parents of students to increase their knowledge about the different factors that can affect their children's utilization of online learning; future researchers to use the result of this study as reference material for future researchers having the same topic.<br/> |
