500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note Abstract

Non-adherence could result in unsuccessful treatment. Ineffective treatment would lead to uncontrolled hypertension, complications, expensive health care cost, hospitalization, and death. Hypertension is one of the leading diseases in the Philippines. It is a common condition that affects older people. Patients need to comply with the appropriate treatment to control hypertension and its complication. However, the treatment adherence is sub-optimal, especially in the developing countries.

The present study investigated the level of adherence with the anti-hypertensive treatment regimen of elderly employees of the City Government of Makati. The study identified the characteristic of the respondents with regards to sex, civil status, educational attainment, family structure, and status of appointment. The study aimed to determine the association between socio-demographic data and level of compliance. And also, the research intended to identify the significant relationship with the level of adherence between the treatment regimens. During the month of October to November 2017, the survey questionnaire distributed to the respondents. The quantitative descriptive study utilized the Hill-Bone survey questionnaire to identify the characteristics of respondents and to measure the level of compliance. The instrument composed of three subscales namely; reducing sodium intake, appointment keeping, and medication taking. From 2016 to 2017 Makati Health data, the 60 years old and above employees with hypertension have a total census of 325. Of these, 296 (91%) respondents agreed to join in the study. Ten participants refused to participate and nineteen participants had no retrieval of the questionnaire.

The highest prevalence of the response of the participants was moderate adherence with 42.9%. Nearly half of the respondents got a sub-optimal level of compliance. The majority of the respondents answered moderate adherence with regards to medication taking. However, there was low adherence with regards to diet and follow-up. The result revealed that the sex, family structure, educational attainment, and status of appointment had no significant relationship with the level of compliance. On the other hand, the association in the level of adherence between the hypertensive treatment regimens is statistically significant. The success of the treatment adherence to control hypertension must be the combined management of diet modification, medication taking, and persistent follow-up. Medication alone is not enough to get the most of the treatment. The result of the study showed a low level of adherence with regards to diet and appointment keeping. Therefore, there is a need to have a geriatric anti-hypertensive nursing program to obtain an optimum level of adherence to treatment.
