General note Abstract

Health-promoting lifestyles (HPL) when related to health promotion behaviors involve any activity (lifestyle) that is accomplished to enhance or maintain the older persons' health and self-actualization. Such behaviors when observed prevents the development of several diseases and has likely effect on promoting health.

This study was conducted to determine the Health-Promoting Lifestyle of 91 older persons (aged 60 to 75 years) residing at Barangay 331 Sta. Cruz Manila as input for Wellness Program. It specifically determined the demographic profiles and its significant difference to their Health-Promoting Lifestyle.

To achieve this, the researcher used standardized questionnaire entitled; "Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPL II)" developed by Walker et al (1987), English Version translated to Tagalog Version. For statistical treatment, the researcher utilized frequency and percentage, weighted mean, t-Test, and ANOVA to analyze and interpret the data gathered.

Results of the study showed that: most of the older person-respondent are female; belonged to the 60-65 years old group; mostly high school level; married; and having hypertension as the most illness they have currently; they often use health responsibility, nutrition, spiritual growth, spiritual growth, stress management as Health-Promoting Lifestyle; and sometimes use physical activity as Health-Promoting Lifestyle; there are significant differences: on the domain spiritual growth when grouped according to age; on the domain nutrition when grouped according to marital status; on the domain health responsibility, nutrition, spiritual growth and stress management when grouped according to current illness.

Based on the findings of the study, the researcher has come up with an output entitled: Wellness Program for Older Persons in the Community which includes different activities that will help both older persons and their significant others to learn, select, and maintain compatible health promoting behaviors/lifestyles to promote health compliance and prevent or avoid possible illnesses.
