Formatted contents note Abstract: Plastics have been widely used across the globe, including those that are single-used. Single-use plastic can be associated with food and beverage establishments as a packaging and container of their product and thus, it has been useful for the operations.
However, its pollution results for the national and local government to take action on its prohibition wherein affecting many businesses - including those small-scale operations.
This study aims to investigate the advantages and challenges of eliminating single-use plastics and evaluate its level of advantage - convenience, product presentation, and hygiene and safety - to local coffee shops in Malate, Manila where the coffee shop owners and customers, as respondents, were selected through stratified sampling using the proportional allocation method. The study employed a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research with interview and survey questionnaires as instruments. The quantitative approach provided the results of the level of advantage of single-use plastics as viewed by coffee shop owners and customers which showed that both of them regard single-use plastics as highly advantageous and beneficial for their respective uses, further proving that there is no significant difference between their views on the advantage of single-use plastics. The qualitative approach, on the other hand, determined the advantages and challenges of eliminating single-use plastics and policy recommendations based on the views of coffee shop owners and customers; in which the findings showed that the advantages are to help sustain a safer environment for the community and promote the shop; the challenges are due to the quality of single-use plastics, expensive plastic alternatives, and concern for carrying drink container; and the policy recommendations on the elimination of single-use plastics are to have a stricter enforcement of existing policies, increase awareness and production of non-plastic alternatives, provide incentives, and collaboration.
