PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MAYNILA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION.;ABSTRACT: This thesis focuses mainly on the reading comprehension of PLM graduating students. Certain number of respondents was chosen randomly from every college with respect to the number of courses under each of which, just so to make sure that each college has its own representatives. Considering this, the type of sampling technique used is then a stratified random sampling. The respondents were given a fifteen (15)-item test which consists of three (3) passages with five (5) questions pertaining to each. Aside from this examination, a survey was also handed to each of the students, which aims to determine the primary factor affecting their reading comprehension and as their self-esteem towards their reading skills, as well. The result of the examination shows that the students mostly find difficulties in determining the purpose of the writer and stating the main idea - in other words, the concepts which are indirectly stated. But still, the exam yields favorable results, for the mean is above the passing score. Whereas, in the survey, it shows that majority of the students believe that their reading comprehension is mostly affected by their thinking, perceptual and sensory skills, followed by the quality of education and training and their purpose and motivation in reading. These outcome obtained opposed the core theory of this treatise which postulates the background knowledge affects most the students reading abilities. Furthermore, the researchers found out that most of the students have moderate self-confidence in reading. Referring to the acquired results, the researchers can convey that the factors stated do really affect the students reading comprehension. In addition to that, the students demonstrate a very positive disposition upon entering the corporate world. This notion is merely corroborated by the result of the question which asks for the self confidence of the students towards their reading skills.
