Action note: In: Summary: ABSTRACT: Amidst all the noise in the surrounding of a busy city, women are subject to catcalls, wolf-whistles, and all other forms of behaviour which are considered as street harassment. The current study seeks to raise awareness through a correlational design to measure the relationship between the frequency of street harassment and the levels of self-objectification and self-esteem of women. Series of self-report scales were administered top 400 female college students within Manila to measure the frequency of the participants past experiences of street harassment, and the participants levels of self-objectification and self-esteem. The scales used were a 28-item Street Harassment Scales, a 24-item Objectified Body Consciousness Scale, and a 10-item Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results gathered indicated that there is a significant moderate negative correlation between street harassment and self-esteem )r-.503, n-400, p<.01), a significant moderate positive correlation between street harassment and self-objectification (r-.560, n=400, p<.01), and a significant moderate negative correlation between self-esteem and self-objectification (r=.550, n=400, p<.01). In conclusion, street harassment resulted to decrease in the women's confidence and self-respect. Women would become more conscious with their physical appearance and would feel less of a person whenever someone would attack them through street harassment. Other editions:
