ABSTRACT: Pediculosis has been a prevalent problem in the Philippines, usually affecting children ages four to 14 years. Pediculus humanus capitis, or human head lice, is the etiologic agent behind this prevailing health concern, as it can spread easily and get transferred from one individual to another. Tagetes patula, a flowering plant that is grown usually for ornamental use, has been studied by many researchers about its insecticidal properties due to the substances that it contains, but limited studies are available regarding its pediculicidal properties despite that it contains pyrethrins, an organic substance utilized to eradicate lice. The aim of the study is to test the pediculicidal and ovicidal potential of T. patula methanolic leaf extract against P. h. capitis. The researchers performed experimentations where the P. h. capitis adult, nymph, and egg specimens were subjected to setups containing 30% leaf extract, 50% leaf extract, commercially available 1% pyrethin as positive control, and water as negative control. Statistical analysis and phytochemical screening were also conducted to ensure credible results. The results showed that the T. patula leaf extract concentrations were effective in killing human head lice on all stages, wherein the 50% concentration had a comparable result with the 1% pyrethrin. It can be concluded that T. patula methanolic leaf extract has pediculicidal and ovicidal properties and can effectively eradicate P. h. capitis in all its life stages.
