ABSTRACT: This study explores the prevalence and characteristics of Aeromonas hydrophila strains in Oreochromis niloticus populations within the East Bay section of Laguna de Bay, Philippines. Sampling sites in Pila and Santa Cruz municipalities were selected based on their relevance to aquaculture practices. A total of 44 samples, evenly distributed by sex, underwent morphometric analysis and A. hydrophila screening. Results revealed a 4% positive for Aeromonas in Santa Cruz, while Pila showed no detections, having a point prevalence of 23 per 1000 in general. Phylogenetic analysis emphasized genetic similarities among A. hydrophila strains and other Aeromonas spp. Colony characteristics of isolated strains were found to be white to tan in color, round, convex, and entire on Tryptic Soy Agar. They also displayed yellow colonies, round, convex, and entire features on RS medium. Susceptibility testing against antibiotics indicated trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole as the most effective, with significant differences observed in zone of inhibition outcomes between different (p = 0.017) and same (p = 0.021) antibiotic family exposures. Specifically, this study promotes visions into the prevalence, characteristics, and antibiotic susceptibility in aquaculture, aiding in fish health management and food safety strategies of the isolated Aeromonas strain.
