ABSTRACT: Introduction. This study focused on the FI-1 experience of the 36 social work students of PLM. Specifically, this study focuses on the applied principles, challenges and coping mechanism of the respondents. This study seeks to fill in the lack of local researches regarding Filed Instruction in the Philippines. Methods. Researchers used explanatory sequential mixed method design in which the researchers obtained quantitative data first through survey that was immediately followed by qualitative collection of data through interview. Data gathering process was held inside PLM's vicinities and some were conducted in the respondents houses. Conclusions. The respondents showed different ways on how they applied the social work principles. The challenges they have experienced has a wide range of levels from personal factors up to the agency factors. Most of the respondents experienced challenge in time management and budgeting for they ran out of money during home visitations and travelling to agency. Despite the challenges, they were able to cope up by sharing it with their friends and listening to music. Researchers conclude that the respondents are equipped enough to enter the world of social work profession. Recommendations. Researchers recommend that respondents be provided with agency and supervisors that could fully support their needs as this is significant in their growth as a professional social worker. Researchers also recommend to future researchers to widen the scope of the study by not limiting to only one school. Moreover, do not cover only challenges of the students, but also of the administrators and supervisors as well in order to properly assess the situation of Field Instruction Program in the Philippines.
