ABSTRACT: This study was made to identify the effects of manganese(II) ions on the morphological characteristics (color and shape of heterocysts and cells) of Fischerella ambigua and also its growth rate. The sorption rate of the different concentrations of the said heavy metal ion by Fischerella ambigua was also determined. Varying concentrations of manganese(II) ions (1ppm, 25ppm, 50ppm, 75ppm, 100ppm) were added to the BG-11 medium , then to the pure cultures of Fischerella ambigua. Different set-ups were made for the determination of growth rate and sorption rate. Samples were taken everyday for the 14-day duration of the study. The determination of growth rate was made through the use of dry method/filter paper method. The sorption rate was determined everyday and was subjected to Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The morphological changes in the cells and heterocysts of F. Ambigua were identified after the duration of the study. The results have showerd that there were changes in the shape and color of the cells and heterocysts of F. Ambigua as the concentration of Mn(II) increased. The shape changed from barrel-shaped to avoid, and the color from very rich green to pale and extreme chlorosis. One-Way Anova and Turkey Test were used to determine if there were significant differences among the growth and sorption rate among the different concentrations of Mn(II). Dunnett's Test was used to identify the presence of significant differences between the growth rate of the treated and untreated groups. There was no significant difference found in the growth rate among the treated groups. This result was also true when the growth rates of the treated and untreated groups were compared. There were significant differences at the varying concentrations of Mn(II). The sorption rate was very fast at lower concentrations of Mn(II) which was 1ppm and 25ppm.
