ABSTRACT A biological approach was employed to assess the raw and treated wastewater taken from a sewage treatment plant in Quezon City. The test organism used was Allium Aggregatum or sibuyas tagalog Equal-sized onion bulbs were treated with the wastewater samples. The root tips were harvested on the fourth day at 12 o'clock midday and were fixed with freshly prepared farmer's fixative. Slides were prepared and were stained with 2% asseto-orcein. Three hundred cells were observed and scored for standard microscopic parameters. Macroscopic analysis was done on the eight day. One-way ANOVA and Scheffe test were used for for the statistical analysis. Among the macroscopic parameters the influence of pollutants were exhibited through the twisting of roots. It was found out that there is a significant difference at .05 level between the results of Allium grown in negative control and the wastewater samples in terms all the standard macroscopic parameters observed. Mitolic index of untreated meristemic cells showed a higher percentage of mitotic index than cells treated with the water samples. There was also a significant difference onions grown in treated wastewater and raw wastewater in terms of root form and percent aberration. Metolic aberrations such as c-mitosis anaphase bridges, precocious chromosomes, vagrant chromosomes, and sticky chromosomes were observed in the treated cells.
